About the Author: Lauri M. Gross
For 20+ years, Lauri wrote feature stories, columns and essays for 15 newspapers and magazines in Ohio and Maryland (about everything, including sometimes about sports). Prior to that, she was part of the team that launched Discovery Channel in the 1980s. Lauri continued to work for the network for 13 years (11 on staff, two as a freelancer) doing PR and other jobs for Discovery and later TLC and Animal Planet (when Discovery purchased/launched those networks). More than 40 years ago, Lauri started learning about sports by watching, listening, reading and asking questions. She is still not a sports expert but she is definitely an expert at being a super-fan and she is ready to show others the way.

On one hand, Lauri’s education about sports began at birth. On the other hand, it began in 1984. And if she had a third hand, she would say her sports education is ongoing. During her childhood in the 1960s and 70s, Lauri listened to her dad listening to baseball games on the radio, she played backyard sports of all kinds and competed on a swim team. Then, starting in high school in the 80s, she competed in field hockey and track, and attended plenty of basketball and football games in high school and college (but she never really understood baseball, basketball or football). Starting when Lauri met her husband-to-be in 1984, Brent has been teaching Lauri about sports. When it all started, Brent would comment on statistics, personality, precedent, strategy, probability, nuance, rules and philosophy and Lauri would be concentrating on one thing: My team is in blue!
Today, although still not a sports expert, Lauri is an expert at being a super-fan.
Lauri grew up in New Jersey and started her post-college life in Alexandria, Virginia, where she and Brent lived for 14 years, and where Katie (now 30) and Noah (now 28) were born. When the kids were aged 1 and 3, the family moved to a rural east-side suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, where Brent was born and raised. They were Clevelanders for 20 years before moving just outside Frederick, Maryland, about equidistant from DC and Baltimore. The Cleveland sports teams – plus the Ohio State Buckeyes – will always be Lauri’s home teams. Fun fact: Cleveland is the smallest of the approximately one dozen U.S. cities that have a professional baseball, basketball and football teams. This is a major reason why Cleveland is such a great sports town, and a major reason why Lauri became a super-fan.
Lauri holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Bucknell University, Dec. 1985.
